Playing the Violin
When the future looks bleak, it's hard to see what's ahead of you. Health issue: suicide. It doesn't always have to be the end if someone takes your hand and tells you to step back.

Playing the Violin

Crying, That was all she ever heard.

Screams

The glass shattering

It was truly in her mind.

Smile and laugh

Perhaps,

That would be enough

to drive away the shadows.

Keep smiling

'till the face cracked

Rain

Unpleasant and wet

It made playing the violin

Her knife, the bow

So difficult.

Rivulets of red

Stained the alabaster

The violin wasn't much fun.

A cafe down the corner

The blue hues of the walls

Darkened her mind

Why?

Did she even have a purpose anymore?

The end

Stop

STOP

...

stop.

And he took her hand away. From the violin.

Beauty

Art Medium: A combination of traditional art, digital art, and photography.

Description: The inspiration behind my piece is today's perception of what makes a person beautiful. Because of this social standard that is evident in magazines and on T.V., some people go to great lengths to achieve that ideal "beauty" that everyone has. With this, it has instilled in the minds of our youth that it is acceptable to go under the knife to alter their appearance just to fit that standard. However, what many people don't realize is that there are great risks that come with plastic surgery where, worse case scenario, you can die on the operating-room table. I hope that people will be able to take from my piece, the good and the bad from cosmetic surgery and that everyone is beautiful in their own special way.

Hepatitis B: A Liver Film Made with Windows Movie Maker and Paint
Music by DJ Zongamin

This video is designed to educate youth on the Hepatitis B virus, the silent killer.  Most people with Hep B do not even realize it until their bodily reacts and symptoms of liver cancer show, and only then is it too late. Be aware and get tested!
The color red in the video symbolizes blood, energy, and life. Red also represents the blood we see in a mother's womb as well as the violent eruption of the birth and mind. The color reminds us of our beginnings and to take care of our health. Using our knowledge of Hepatitis B, we can prevent and combat this virus to our health's advantage.

Nightmare Girls everywhere look at the super-skinny models that showcase the "ideal" body type.  It scares me to see the lengths that they are willing to go in order to fit that image.  I hope my poem will help girls realize that healthy bodies are ideal because everyone should be different.

<!--[if !ppt]--> <!--[endif]-->

Nightmare

Table set:

Green salad,

Roasted chicken,

Brown bread,

Bright beans,

White rice,

Yellow yams-

Delicious dinner set.

Looking at the food,

Staring at one’s self,

Thinking-

A nightmare.

The dream begins with the call to dinner,

Continues throughout:

An insatiable urge to stuff the face, the stomach

Until the cheeks bulge with the excessive amount filling the body.

The nightmare is not yet through.

Surreptitiously looking at first mom, then dad, then brother, then sister,

Thinking, “No one is watching”

Slipping off to the bathroom,

Kneeling on the cold tiles,

Letting the nightmare continue.

Staring at the yawning toilet mouth,

(Hearing its demand for sacrifice),

Pushing her finger into the back of her throat,

Making the churning acidic food remains exit in a most uncouth manner:

The nightmare temporarily ends.

Returning to the table, she sighs.

Her throat aches,

Her stomach churns,

Her eyes burn,

And she is afraid.

The nightmare never ends for her.

Her Harshest Critic I took a digital picture, then enhanced it to show more creative effects and uniqueness on the computer. All work was done by myself.      I chose to create an artwork depicting a teen girl judging herself in he mirror because one of the biggest issues plaguing teenagers, girls specially, is that of self-esteem. Many girls are unhappy with their physical appearance, and strive to be "prettier" or "skinnier" even though having a "perfect" body or a beautiful face never guarantees happiness. The pressure from other teens around them and the media also reinforces this cycle of unrealistic comparison to others and the feeling of inadequacy. This mind set can lead to eating disorders and low self-esteem, both of which are serious health problems.

No Other Way Out  I chose photography because it captures both the good and bad moments in time turning them into memories for me to look back at and reminisce. Moreover, photography makes me look at simple everyday items in a different perspective and gives me an outlet for my emotions when they cannot be expressed with words. This describes a time in my life when I felt depressed and did not feel like talking to anyone because I felt like I couldn't trust anyone, no matter how close they were to me. I felt as if no one could understand me or what I was going through. As my depression dragged on, I felt even more isolated. Even when I was surrounded by friends who cared about me and asked me if everything was alright, I still felt alone. The pain I felt from isolation became so severe that I felt like there was no other way, other than pills, to relieve this pain. Even though I knew that my pain was mental rather than physical, I was hoping that they would somehow help. Thankfully, before taking painkillers became a habit, I finally thought to myself that I should not risk my own health and soon made a resolution to stop taking painkillers.

Title: Light or Flight

Medium: Watercolour and Pencil on Paper
Dimensions 15 inches by 19 inches

Description:
Peer pressure is one of the proponents of negative habits. One of the more harmful habits is smoking—many are under the impression that smoking is "cool". Smoking sabotages health and deteriorates both the mental and physical being. It has substantially gained popularity in teens, especially minors.

I created this piece in response to the increasing number of students at my high school who have become underage smokers. Because adolescents are easily swayed by opinions of their close friends, peer pressure plays a big role in the progressive spread of smoking. Another reason why peer pressure is successful is because it feeds on insecurities. I choose to use two girls as representatives, because some teens depend on cigarettes as a means for dieting. The girl pushing the cigarettes is shown in a darker light, in gloomy colors, while the girl sitting is basking in a purer light. This shows how easily, or how difficult, it is to be influenced.

My piece demonstrates the link between two friends, and why one should sometimes reconsider one's friends and one’s choices. "Light or Flight" refers to the common adage of "Fight or Flight", showing that there is always a choice.

Family Grades Relationship Friends Stress  This picture is in a way showing you the health problem of stress, and how some of us feel when we get stressed. Submerged and trapped in the iron bars of stress, surrounded by the world and all its stressful situations and causes. Sometimes it just drives us mad, insane, and makes us cringe away inside our little prison of the painful reality of stress. Stress is sadly the natural reaction to some if not many situations in the human life time. This picture represents being a common teenager, or perhaps even child, being caged within the causes of common stress for our generation, such as the harsh pressure of family, friends, grades, and other human relationships such as boyfriends and girlfriends and what it can seem to do to us inside. Stress is a common source of depression for most, causing unhealthy relationships and decisions, which can also make us go over the edge, both physically and mentally.

"An Apple A Day Keeps the Doctor Away"

This is a drawing done in pencil, pen, and colored pencils.  Note: The drawing was too big so I had to take a picture of it, so the quality of it isn't that good.

When I think of health, I think about food. You might be thinking why, well its because in the U.S there's a lot of people that are obese or overweight and part of the reason is because of the unhealthy foods that they eat. Some children have never even ate a fruit or a vegetable and have eaten more of junk food and fast food. And the result, children are becoming obese as well; they are getting many health problems that normally occure in adults. So I think the saying, " An Apple A Day, Keeps the Doctor Away," can really relate to the topic about health; if you eat healthily then you wouldn't have to see the doctor as often and wouldn't have a lot of health problems.

Nutritious Fruits and Foods: Vegetables

My drawing is to address the lack of adknowledgement of what to eat to maintain a healthy diet, such as fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain the nutrients that a body needs to grow and develop. My drawing is to show some of the many fruits and vegetables that one can choose to eat and if not only, enjoy.

Healthy or Unhealthy

In my art piece i decided to work with oil pastel because it's unique then just using pencils or colored pencils. It also gives it a nice textured look. My art piece shows how nutritious food like fruits can give you a delightful, colorful feeling and a step towards healthiness. Also how in contrast that junk food like french fries or pizzas can affect your health in a bad way, leaving you in a gloomy and dark feeling if junk food is eaten too much. Although my drawings aren't that great, it compares and contrast how eating certain foods can determine how your health can be.

Life Full of Calories

“Oh shoot, I ate more than 500 calories! No more eating for me!” This was my life when a disease cruelly preyed on me for 2½ years. I had to endure a long, painful psychological struggle in order to get rid of this illness. The days when I was ruled by anorexia nervosa, I just couldn’t stop counting calories. My brain was constantly tormented over the number of calories I ate. I was so obsessed that my sleep revolved around the word ‘calorie’. My paranoia eventually led me to the hospital. I thought with deep sadness, “Here I am, wasting my summer, when I could be going out with my friends, exploring life.” I longed to be “normal” again, but it was years before I fully recovered, as my weight, watched under the wary eyes of doctors, continued to rise and drop. During recovery, it took great willpower to overcome conflicting thoughts that my mind proposed. I cried in my sleep because I felt like a prisoner. I finally decided to stop thinking about calories entirely and to eat whatever I felt like. Keeping my mind in this view proved burdensome, but I managed to reach the point of “freedom” again. Going through this unforgettable experience, I came to realize that my health is my life. I hope all readers gain an insight of what an underweighted person’s consequences are, and learn to prevent themselves from such a hazard by taking good care of their health.

Make the right decision

I wanted to create a drawing that represented a common health issue faced by Asian teenagers alike. My inspiration came from some Asian gangsters I encountered one day while walking in Chinatown. I wanted to recreate this scene by addressing how teenagers face the decision as to whether or not they should smoke. In my drawing, you can see that there are two sides to the struggle.  On the right side, you can see that the boy decides not to smoke and leads a healthy life eating fruits and vegetables instead. He is guided by his conscience as shown by the fruit angel and has a healthy heart. On the other side, you can see that the same boy chooses to smoke and consequently becomes skinnier and darker. His hair color starts to fade and his heart slowly becomes darker due to smoke suffocation. The Chinese dragon serpent to his left (inspired by the serpent from Adam and Eve), represent the evil influences in the boy's life that convinces him to smoke. My drawing is intended to convince the audience not to listen to this evil serpent and follow the angel instead.

My entry is called H.E.A.L.T.H.  and it is showing how to be mentally, emotionally and physically healthy.  H stands for hearing. When friends see their friend or friends in an abusive relationship, they would try and warn their friend of it. However, some friends refuse to listen and sometimes, ignore them completely. The best thing to do in this situation is keep your head, heart and ears open because anything can happen. E stands for exercising. It is important to exercise at least 3 times a week to keep the body fit and healthy.  A stands for above the influence. Throughout our high school life and probably throughout our lives, we will encounter peer pressure. Teenagers should understand that we don't have to listen to them and that there are people just like them. L stands for learning. High schoolers should continually set goals for themselves to break their bad habits and learn to adopt good ones that would benefit their bodies rather than harm it.  T stands for talk. Teenagers do have problems, however, some of us are unwilling to talk about them. Teenagers should understand that their parents and friends are there help them during their time of need as they are ready to rejoice during a celebration.

Finally, H stands for hope. Teenagers, these days, are constantly stressed over how to balance their school life with their job or their sport. However, the best thing to do is to be optimistic and to try to your best.

The UnbelieverAcrylics on magazine paper and canvas  16"x20" I created this piece after flipping through and old issue of Vogue magazine. I came across the health and beauty section and was appalled by the absurdity of the tips the magazine had to offer - tips about smooth skin, luscious hair, plump lips and, of course the long-debated topic for years, staying thin.
That's where I stopped reading. I recalled times during off season (I played competitive volleyball and keeping in shape during season was no problem) when I felt absolutely obese. I'd notice curves here, some extra meat there, and flabby arms. I remember being so desperate at those times to be thin and petite that I would consider cutting down meals and eating less. At one point, I even considered starving myself.
I've long passed that stage in my life when I so desired to fit a size 4, and I've learned to accept my body for what it is. Seeing 'health' tips in beauty and fashion magazines inspires me to rebel against the image they're selling. Women are too valuable, too strong to allow these articles to mold and define them.

I clipped out some of the tips and assembled them onto my canvas. With a few quick swipes, I covered nearly all of the text with the thick, unforgiving paint. I stepped back and admired what I'd done: expelled the commercial formula for beauty and created art with the byproduct.

Mental Health Mental Health

As I enter the battle field,
I saw what I was against.
Needing to keep fit,
dealing with high expectations,
fighting infectious diseases,
running away from depression,
avoiding family issues,
and protecting myself from violence.

I noticed all the eyes glaring down,
just waiting for me to fail.
Then i realized,
I was alone.
No family,
no friend,
no doctor,
no one.
Wondering will anyone rescue me,
save me,
protect me,
cure me.

Suddenly, a blur formed,
sensing a white light.
My eyes slowly created a picture;
my mom,
my dad,
my doctor.
I've been awaken from a coma
and it hit me.

Terribly Beautiful

Terribly Beautiful Carefully, the girl puts on lipstick, then lip gloss. She
tares at the mirror for a moment: hazel eyes bordered with thick, black
eyeliner, cheeks powdered with blush, and shiny, red lips. She heaves a sigh. Why am I still so ugly? Tearing her gaze
way, she steps onto a scale, afraid of the numbers. Furrowing her brow, she is
till unsatisfied. Why am I so fat? The ries of thousands of girls echo along.
Insecurity and anxiousness boils inside her, crazily reeling
round. Flipping through a magazine, images bombard her: perpetually long
egs, elegant arms. Tiny waists, flat stomachs, winning smiles.  Every so often, she will stare at herself in comparison while what little self-esteem she has diminishes.  A feeling of intense desperation settles inside her, the feeling that she will never become the beauty on the T.V. or in he magazine or on the billboard. With determination, she decides to skip
inner. Again.

I watch her with sad eyes. I watch her skip the next meal
and the next. I watch her become immersed deeper into a culture which distorts
er perception of beauty and I watch her struggle to fit the constraints of the
conventions of society.  I wish I could
top her. I wish I could shut off the media and hold her skinny, frail body and
ell her not to worry, to simply be herself. I wish I could tell her she can
define beauty for herself. I wish I could say, You are beautiful

For Fear of Consequence explores the early teen stresses: bullying, exclusion, being unjustly prevented from participating in a desirable "normal" life, regardless of things like sex, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation. The poem also explores the results of this discrimination, namely by showing that it is important to allow everybody, regardless of the things listed, access and active participation in society, otherwise, they will be forced to do unsafe things, in this case, participate in casual sex, in order to feel included.  For Fear of Consequence

He knew since he could remember that he wasn't the same,

Corrected at four, excluded at seven, picked last for teams,
Bullied at ten, othered all his life until now, swimming upstream.
He would rather be lame, but he knew he had to fix it. What a shame.

It should never have come to this, but after what had been done,
After the smell of the trees was no longer, after his virtue seized,
Unwillingly, unknowingly, unlovingly. At least he would not be teased.
He had done it now, it, and they would no longer make fun.

Beyond that, he knew it couldn't be right:
The two didn't fit; he knew not her name,
But his victory, his conquest, gained him much acclaim.
Though now that the deed was done, all he knew was to be contrite.

For neither wanted to: she had bills to pay, so it was not surprising
When he had to prove them wrong, he had to escape desolation
And by doing so did nothing for himself, save his aberration.
Not man nor beast can escape the disguising affliction simply by womanizing.

She knew not when she was young that she would be a whore,
Unlike he, who knew since three that he would never love her or her sex,
And with the bullying, the confusion, the regression of y on x,
It wasn't okay to be gay, but he knows not what he is anymore.

Excuses

I wrote a poem, "Excuses", on how teenagers are giving out excuses to not deal with their problems about health or their situations in life.      I wrote a poem about how young people uses excuses to neglect their health. Dealing with different health problems, there many different ranges of excuses but they all ignored the future consequences of one’s health. For problems like smoking to depression, one can give the excuses to comfort one’s consciousness. Sometimes young people ignore of getting help and instead turn to excuse as justification order to make one feel better about one self and will lead to further deteoriate their health.  “Excuses” Self-destructed youths filled of self-pity and denial in the gray modernized society begins their long unwinding excuses:   " It's just to relax," said the underage youths while flicking the shiny lighter for a blue hot flame to light the paper-wrapped cylinder. " It's just only one drink," replied back the adolescents while screwing open the jagged edge cap of the dark longneck beer bottle. " It's just only food," retorted the plump round teenagers while wolfing down their juicy calorie-filled hamburger and using their other hand to reach down to a bag of fatty-laced chips. " It's just to have fun," laughed the juveniles as they stick a long piercing needle into their skin or snorting addictive white powder into their nostril. " It's not his fault, it's mine," the shaking pale girls repeated in the back of their head as they busies up by covering up their bloody wounds with sticky bandages and excuses that they fell down. “ It’s hopeless, no one will help me,” chanted the curled up teenagers in the dark corner of their mind while looking down from their open window thinking how nice it would to jump down. “It’s worthless, I can’t deal with it,” shouted back the irrational youths filled with the urges of flinging their arm to knocked the piles of crispy white sheet of paper embedded with restricting black texts and disapproving red marks.

The excuses deteoriate their mind and body never knowing when can the excuses turned into solutions.

The title of this song is R(estin) I(n) P(aradise)  This song is the mental youth fountain of health. I produced every aspect of this song for people to relax, kick back, and enjoy life. Every human has some kind of hate, pain, envy, and so forth imprinted in them. I would like my message of this song to come across as acknowledging the negative that is there, but it is truly your choice to follow it or not. By following the positive, paradise will follow even if the negatives might get in the way. Over coming this obstacle is the test and everything circles around health. I composed, arranged, performed and produced it. This song is dedicated to those with closed minded brains.  I wrote this song because i wanted the listeners to understand the concept, all is one and one is all. Enjoy!

Healthy We all know about “connect-the-dots”, which is a simple game that we play when we were little kids. When all the numbered dots get connected, an image appeared. However ,I remember that I could not always finish the one that has too much points because I got confused by looking at the numbers, and dropped down my pen to play with friends.  Staying healthy is just like playing the game, and keeping all the dots together is like gathering all of the good habits to form a healthy life. Nevertheless, people try to work on it but get lazier day by day, and complain about why being healthy is such a hard thing. In my opinion, it turns to be so difficult since you take your time and patience. Remember, you are the one who is holding the pen to get the word “healthy”. And there’s nothing blocking you from getting it. So start to connect your dots now, no matter if it’s physical or mental, and built your own path to a healthier life!

“Beauty in Change” My poem, “Beauty in Change” is relevant to health in that it describes two people that have the Hepatitis B virus; one views this change optimistically and one views this pessimistically.  In doing so, I wanted to show that there is light in change and to inspire people to keep on living, and in a way, my poem relates to depression. There are always two ways to view something, and keeping things in negative light is not the most productive. I wanted, also, how just relating to others with the same disease can help people grow and change their views on life. Although many children in the United States are lucky enough to get vaccinated, those that have not should, especially if they are of Asian descent. Yet, just because someone is unlucky enough to be transmitted this disease, it appears that the fastest killer isn’t the disease itself but how someone views life after being diagnosed. Many people have extended the “years” estimated by their doctors by just living everyday in the best way they can and changing one’s mindset positively is the most powerful thing that can ever happen.

“Beauty in Change”

Hey there boy… why shouldn’t you smile?

Just take notice of the greens, the blues,

The pretty hues in the world,

Realize the beauty in the colors

Because that is where everything is happening,

Where life is happening-

Sitting around, the growing feeling of degradation,

Should not create the lull that

Death creates in its recipients.

Trapped in the allure of the death

Will cause nothing more than the infatuation with the end.

Don’t think, just live,

This hep b isn’t killing me,

It’s growing me,

Shouldn’t it be likewise?

This disease is the beginning

A new beginning of change;

Despite seeming only a respite,

This beauty is forever.

So tell me, why shouldn’t you smile?

I Got to Be Me

My art depiction relates to health because it describes both the effects of drug abuse and peer pressure. Eight pictures portray the terrible consequences of taking drugs. These consequences, besides sleep deprivation and anger, change a person from, essentially, being "me." In my choice to stay away from drug-conformity, I remain true to my identity and refrain from succumbing to bad judgment.

TEENOLOGY

For my project i decided to do a collage. It has to do with mostly young ladies.(teenagers) Alot of teens have a lot of stress problems and also troubled relationship. Some even suffer from relationship abusement. Alot of Ladys worrie about their diet, some even stress so much that they turn in to an anorexic. Women tend to worry about what they should wear. I think every picture has alot of meaning just by looking at it. Like they say "a picture can tell 1000 words"

I named my project TEENOLOGY because its mainly about teens. As you can see my project has a lot of picture but it also forms a face. The reason why it is a face, because i think that a person face can show you a lot of their feelings and emotions just by looking. the picture are mostly about teenagers boys and girls that share the same things. It shows that how us teenagers have a lot of stress mainly because of relationships or personal situations. For some girls they stress a lot when it comes to their weight or how they look like. For guys its mostly relationships. I'm not so sure about guys because i am a girl. But my project says a lot of things and has a lot of meaning. You just have to look in to it.

Endless Life  A bean is similar to any human. In order for a bean to terminate and then grow healthily, a suitable environment and sufficient nutrients are essential components. As for humans, there are many more worries related to health for us to concern. Good health can be maintained by having a well family relationship, a balanced diet, or a good communication or cooperation with different people inside or outside of school. In addition, staying away from funk food, contaminated areas, abnormal sleeping habit, weapons, or alcohols can also improve and better one’s health.

We all want to stay healthy. Some people only emphasize physical health but not mental health. However, I believe physical health and mental health are equally important. We encounter a lot of pressure from work. They can via play sports or take a rest to keep the mental health.

I hope via my artwork “Healthy Chair ”to remind everyone play more sports or take rest in everyday, because playing sports are not only improve our physical health. In addition, people also can take a rest in everyday, they can just sit down and put all the pressure down, let them relax. The figure of my artwork” Chair” is a strong man’s body figure, specially I used the straight line to represent the strong.

Why Hurt It  This art piece that I submitted is related to health because it explains the importance about a person's body, and it shows the things that a person can do to cause problems to their body. I drew a picture of the heart to represent a human's body because it is one of the most important organs in the body. One of the main things that a human can do to put their body in danger is violence. Violence can affect the body in many different ways. There is physical violence such as, punching, slapping or kicking. There is also mental violence such as, putting someone down, and ways that can hurt someone’s feelings and that can bring someone to depression. Other than violence, there are also ways that the person itself is doing to hurt their own body, such as drinking alcohol or smoking. Smoking can cause many diseases like lung cancer which can cause abnormality to the body. Drinking alcohol can damage the liver very bad. The liver actually helps the human body to clear out wastes from what people drink. But for the people that drink alcohol, they are hurting what is on their side helping them. This is exactly the reason I created the quote, "Why hurt it? When it is on your side...helpin' you!" People are basically damaging their own body when do these kinds of things. The full purpose about this art piece is to give people in the world a heads up of what they are doing to themselves. They might not know that they are hurting an ally, an ally that everybody needs to survive.

As shown in the calligraphy artwork, the Chinese phrase「身體健康是人生最大的幸福」translates to "Good health is one's biggest happiness." I originally thought of this phrase to portray the many ideals of human as they age. In time, we, as teenagers, will come to value our health as a kind of fortune that will bring us happiness. Without good health, one cannot enjoy life to its fullest. Our well-being contributes to our success now and in the future.

Endless Night

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Barely ever moving,

 Senses became unclear,

 Neither here nor there,

 Restlessness was aware.

 Shrouded by darkness,

 I see no light.

I can feel the presence of eternity

 Winning over this perfect night.

  Not asleep but alone,

At the flash of the flickering sight,

 When will this end tonight?

We Have ColorsColored Image; 2304x3072

The teens, dressed in multiple colors, are blended in the plain ordinary background and, therefore, the colors are apparently much vivid. Despite their dispirited facial expressions, the multiple colors bring out the hidden optimism and life. In the 21st century, with greater competition and advanced technology, people begin to see things as obsolete because they have to keep up with the new inventions and ideas. Because of this, when they become materialistic, they gradually learn not to cherish their relationships that keep them healthy, such as family and friends, and that they misinterpret their own identities. No matter how much things they may posses, they are not happy without a warm relationship, but colors could revive them and create a better atmosphere in seek of their true identities.

Relationship Problems
This drawing discribes a girl that is having relationship problems with her boyfriend. She sees a couple at the park looking very happy together, and she starts to starts to draw. Because she is depressed, she doesn't draw a very happy drawing, but she draws herself breaking up with her boyfriend. The broken heart necklace on the floor of the drawing symbolizes her feelings.

Food FrenzyPen ink on 8 1/2 by 11 paper

In this black and white art piece titled Food Frenzy, I was inspired by the many food pyramids. The questions, “Low on energy?” and “Are you eating healthy?” stimulate and invokes one attention to their eating habits. The non-healthy foods, represented with vampire teeth are energy drainers. The fruits, vegetables, and grains are good sources of energy and are shown with a smile. However, with the meats and dairy, they are good for energy, but they should be eaten in moderation. In recognizing that fried foods and junk foods are energy drainers, I try to consume more foods that give more vitality such as fruits, vegetables and grains.

FRUITS + VEGETABLES = A HEALTHY DIET
I drew a boy made out of fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet consists of fruits and vegetables and in order to portray this idea, I drew a boy made out of these foods. His head is a lemon; his hair is made of carrots; his eyes are grapes; his nose is an apple; his cheeks are oranges; his ears are strawberries; his mouth is a slice of watermelon; his shirt is made of corn, broccoli, and mushrooms; his collar is made of bananas.

Moderation
This is the story of a girl who gradually loses balance in her life as she battles bulimia. Her relationship with her boyfriend inspires her to lose weight, but her eating and exercising habits end up growing increasingly extreme. She is soon overwhelmed.

This kind of situation appears to be rather far fetched, but it is altogether too common in our schools. As self-conscious teens seek to express their identity, they often lose it instead as they succumb to the pressures from the world around them. This self-destructive attitude may be expressed, in extreme cases, through eating disorders, as described in this poem, or through drug abuse and self-harm. Yet our society does nothing to build teens' self confidence or show them that they are fine the way they are. There is nobody to tell them that they are loved. This is definitely a problem that should be addressed.

It may seem unfeasible for our community to launch massive self-esteem campaigns, let alone for them to work. However, it is definitely plausible for the society to preach moderation; teens must be taught when there is enough, and when there is too much. If we learn to avoid extreme emotions and extreme actions, such cases of self-destructive behavior can be prevented.

Moderation

he reaches into the jar for a cookie to give to

the boy next to her – her boy –

But then

She’s eating again,

he assumes.

and he laughingly accuses,

Fatty.

her eyes question,

then, in a long moment, comprehend.

And since that moment

her body was not the same:

hips too pudgy – calves too thick – face too round.

So this is how they see me.

At the check-out line she sees the glossy models gleaming
rom the magazine covers –

skinny, every one of them. She didn’t look like them.

So she quietly leaves the line and

puts back the snacks she held in
er hands.

turns down second helpings at the family Thanksgiving dinner.

sets the alarm clock early to run every morning.

studies the nutrition facts on every package.

cuts back on calories.

then cuts back on meals.

The void of her stomach protested –

But her boy called her Sexy once.

So this should have been victory. But she went further.

her body was the enemy.

urges had to be controlled.

there is only disgust if she fails.

Her boy looks worried some days. Isn't it enough?

Not enough. she imposes more rules

calculate all calories consumed and burned and

spend three hours running every day to

lose ten pounds in two weeks.

her boy laughs nervously. This is impossible.

I’ll prove you wrong.

But she doesn’t.

control always slips.

she makes amends,

but

more purges only lead to

more binges and she needs

more exercise,

more rules,

Enough

deftly slips away

as she futilely hungers

for moderation.

Healthy Mood

<!--[endif]-->

The word “health” can be divided into two categories: physical health, which deals with the functions of body and mental health, which is the emotions and feelings that people have from daily lives. Whenever the topic of health is mentioned,  many people can only respond to their physical conditions or how strong is their body; however, they may not notice that mental health is as important or even more essential than physical health. This is simply because our mental conditions directly affect the attitudes and reactions that we take on our daily routines. For example, if a person were depressed, he may not have intentions to try anything. On the contrary, a happy person is more likely to enjoy his life and every try. As a Chinese immigrant, I can deeply feel the negative effect of mental stress. When I came to the U.S., I often had migraine but I still do not know that the cause was too much stress. As a 12 years old girl, what I can feel was sad, and lonely. This bad feeling hinders my learning while I was having more migraine. However, the number of migraine I had decreases as I get to know more friends, and I felt better and better for my school work. Then, I started  noticing that my bad feelings were gone after I talked to my friends, and this new mood gave me energy and confidence to work better. Nowadays, people may easily neglect the importance of mental health. Nevertheless, keeping a relax and happy mood to face every difficulty is much stronger than having a stressed mind.

Mental Reminiscences

I love the metro subway. The feeling of adventure, time, and place. I am on a one person ride and there is a sole destination I must arrive at. And people on board with me are on the same journey, although to a different "where". It is the innocent feeling of adult childless that I carry with me during each trip, to school or any place I go alone to. It is like a sweet treat through the reminiscence of childhood. I think on the train sometimes, about life and family, friends, love, and murder. I never say it, but its on my mind--I love my friends and family.  I love my cousin, even if now I have unresolved matters with her and myself. We use to be so close, it was my sense of conservation which cut us off. My love is in my thoughts and written words. My hate for the person who violated me is open, after two years. Sometimes I have thoughts of ending his life, but no more. I now seek closure, not revenge or justice. I have come in terms with myself and the past. Although the after effect was unfortunate, what has happened has happened. I forgive you. My mental health is flourishing with my life experiences: divorce, sister, grandparents, childhood infatuations, high school, "the incident"(violation), but my life does not end at that wretched point. If I had not had my mental health, my sanity, friends, I would’ve bitten the dust.

The photo I just submitted is a scene of a group of 50-70 years old ladies who wakes up at the break of dawn and dance in the park near my house. Every morning as I go to school, I can see them dancing there. I admire their spirit and their devotion to keep dancing as an exercise. Also, something about them makes me feel that they enjoy what they are doing. This phot relates to health as a message to say that exercising is fun with a big group of people.

My drawing is a food pyramid.  It relates to health because in order to develop a healthy lifestyle, we need to eat a variety of foods.  As my drawing shows, our bodies need Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Milk/Dairy and Meats/Fish.  For example, Grains give us fiber in our diet and keep our bodies regulated.  Vegetables provide vitamins, enzymes, and minerals.  Fruits also provide our bodies with minerals, vitamins which is an important functions in the body.  Milk/Dairy provide calcium, and Meat is an important source of protein, vitamins and iron.  I hope that when people look at my drawing, it will remind them of how important it is to have a fully healthy diet.

Stressed Out Student (SOS)
I used markers and color pencils.  In this drawing, I am trying to represent the stressed out teen students of today. Students don't get enough sleep because of homework, they don't get to do what they love because they never have time, and students are just basically working away every night. Teens today are stressed out and they are under a lot of pressure. This is a big problem.

Important Yet Ignored
Usually when one hears that one's friend is “sick,” one thinks of disease and illnesses that affect the physical body. However, there is a type of ailment that is even more important than any disease, and that is emotional health – namely depression.
Depression is often ignored by adults, being dubbed as “teenage angst,” but in truth both are serious issues. Teenagers are more emotional than their younger or older counterparts, and it seems neither age group can help them: the children have no experience, and the adults have ignored their experience. Stress is a common cause for feeling depressed, especially when it involves academic or social issues. A bad grade can lead to loss of privileges, and a fight with a friend can lead to a loss of protection. Often stress is caused by pressure from parents or friends, but especially parents. The push for good grades and good colleges can estrange and strain the limits of a growing youth.
What’s deadly about depression is that one often can’t tell whether his friend is depressed simply by appearance. One could have a great big smile on his face and be hiding a stressed soul. Asking does not help – usually depressed people want to be left alone and will say, “It’s nothing.”
Suicide is not an option. We need to understand that depression is a sensitive issue that needs to be examined. Professional advice should be sought immediately to nurture the depressed back to a healthy life.

Today and as well as in the past, people are turning to drugs and violence as a way to relieve the stress that comes along with the troubles that arise at school, home or work. In result, these people's actions are controlled by narcotics and their actions affect others in the society. This is shown in my piece where drug users are chained to an addictive drug meaning that the drug has taken over the person's life leaving them helpless and weak. To combat this problem, I chose to add a Chinese lion which according to Chinese traditions is used to keep away evil spirits. In a sense, the people whom are chained to the drugs represent the evil spirits moving forward, disrupting the peace while the people in the front watching the lion dance are those whom have not yet been exposed to drugs. With the infusion of Asian culture and increased emphasis on health education, the negative influences are pushed back.
